At times, the culinary view of Westwood can seem a bit repetitive, filled with chain restaurants, small sandwich stands and fro-yo shops. If the small portions of upscale Los Angeles restaurants annoy you, a trip to the Griddle Cafe is well worth the money. For a UCLA student, the perfect midday meal is often cheap and convenient. Clementine, located in Century City, offers neither of these qualities. It does, however, offer something most Westwood haunts do not – ambience. The Gayley Avenue strip in Westwood may primarily be known for its greasy burger joints and sandwich shops that are – let’s face it – only palatable as emergency sustenance stops. I don’t know if you have a favorite celebrity chef, but mine is Mario Batali. “When was the last time you had cream soda or root beer from a tap?” reads a sign on the wall of Westwood’s The Stand, the latest addition to the Encino Valley hot dog chain. Westwood is a perpetual disappointment when it comes to the culinary state of our little village. It’s nearly finals week. You’re sick, tired, you’ve spent the previous eight hours in Powell, and there is simply nothing on this Earth that could compel you to cook something. A restaurant that serves a sauce made of 40 whole garlic cloves as an appetizer might not seem like the perfect place for a first date.Culinary Connoisseur: “Gardens on Glendon”
